| Location: The site of the Mount Pleasant Furnace [Corsica Furnace] can be reached from Corsica, Jefferson Co.. From Corsica go west approx. 1.75mi. on U.S. Rt.322. Turn north on T-560, this road could be one of two roads before you reach the interchange on I-80. The land and roads in this area have been much altered and changed due to strip mining operation and the construction of I-80. T-560 will run into T-566. Mount Pleasant Furnace was located about 100 feet north of a house and barn, which were on the right of this road. Mt. Pleasant Furnace [Corsica Furnace] was torn down during the summer or fall of 1961, by the strip mine operators, stripping the coal in this area.
The site of Mount Pleasant Furnace was visited in Oct., 1961,
by Merle Oberlin, Myron Sharp & William Thomas, they found that a strip
mine operation had pushed the stack over, although at that time it had not
been removed or covered up. A salamender was still there, on edge;
also a piece of pig iron composed of three pigs still together. These
ware near several long pieces of 12" or 14" cast iron pipe, which probably
were part of the blast piping. |
